Deep sea divers and explorers describe an immersive, incomparable calm when they are at great depth. It seems a paradox to their adrenalin-fuelled ventures into the unknown. But they speak of it as one might speak of a drug, or a heady melody, and so it begins to make sense. From our very beginning we must balance the seduction of adventure with the safe promise of shore. How fraught a life is without either.
